BODY TALK

Last week we discussed how to begin/introduce your write-up. Today we will discuss how to craft the body of your write-up.

To craft the body of write-up, start with:

  • A topic sentence.
  • Add supporting details: Focus on the words that elaborate your ideas. You can use details like: statistics, examples of past occurrences, and sensory details.
  •  Use transitions to connect ideas.

Topic Sentences?

A topic sentence describes the sentence in an expository paragraph which summarizes the main idea of that paragraph. It is usually the first sentence in a paragraph (Wikipedia). A topic sentence guides the content of your paragraph. Each topic sentence;

  1.   Tells what the paragraph is about: It shapes your paragraph by limiting its contents.
  2.    Supports your main topic and sub-topics.
  3.    Deals with one main point. This makes it easier to organize your material.

 A Topic Sentence can be:
  1. A reworking of the question you have been given.
  2. A statement of purpose.
  3. A sentence containing statistics.

INTRODUCTIONS

First impressions matter, whether you are meeting someone new or opening an essay. Your introduction must:

  • ·         Capture your reader’s attention.
  • ·         State your purpose for writing, that is, your focus statement.

To capture your readers’ attention you can begin with:

  • ·       Anecdote: anecdotes are great openings for writing biographies, informative essays, personal narratives, speeches and term papers.
  • ·         Humour: this works best in “lighter” writings.
  • ·         Quotations
  • ·         Question: you can start an essay by turning your assignment into a question. For example, Students, they insist, should be able to speak, read, and write a second language. State your opinion for or against this proposal. You can begin this essay with the question, “Should students be required to learn to speak, read, and write a second language?”
  • ·         A surprising statistic.
  • ·         Descriptions (describe the environment, person)

LET’S WRITE: EFFECTIVE WRITING

Effective writing... is a piece of written communication that conveys its message in the simplest, clearest, and most concise and most readable way possible.

It is also a piece of writing in which the manner of expression dovetails perfectly with the subject matter; one in which...there is close fit between what and how.

Simplicityclarity, readability and conciseness are thus the hallmarks of effective writing.
-Festus Adesanoye.

To write effectively always remember that your writing should be divided into three parts:

You should always Start, Explain and End

You start with an introduction: This is the beginning! If you want to capture your readers’ attention, start well!

Explain in the middle: The body of your work should provide your main points and details.

End with a conclusion: Bring your writing to a thoughtful close.
